A History of The Sound Alternative John Miller and Kevin Kuptz met over 25 years ago at the Michigan State Fair. Both were trombonists, vying for recognition in the Michigan All-State Honors Band. Since then, John and Kevin have played in various groups together and toured China, Japan, Europe and the Americas. While in college together at Wayne State, John and Kevin were frequently in competition , yet remained friends and respectful of each other's abilities. Years later, when Kevin was performing as a member of Steve King and The Dittilies, he called upon John and his brother, Don to play "a few gigs" with the band, in order to add a horn section. These few gigs soon became a decade. Hundreds of gigs later it became clear to John that he wanted to create something new - a band of musicians he had met through the years who impressed him the most. He went about assembling these great musicians and the band is now known as The Sound Alternative.
